In this writing i will explain how Shakespeare uses fate in his play Romeo and Juliet i will give three different sources that he uses to show the presence of fate. The question i will be answering is how does William Shakespeare explore the idea of fate in his play Romeo and Juliet?

In the play Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare uses a lot of co-incidences for example the servant could not read a list of people invited to a party but the servant then find Romeo and she asked him if he could read and in his luck he could so he read the list to the servant and saw his love Rosaline , later on that evening they was going  to the party and Romeo had a dream that something bad was going to happen and something good was going to happen. During the party Romeo had just someone he said more beautiful than life itself  (this was the good thing now for the bad) Romeo was caught by a capulet not just any capulet it was Tybalt the cousin to Juliet but Romeo had fled with his mates Benvolio and Mercutio. Later in the play Tybalt finds Romeo eventually and they fight but Mercutio had come to save Romeo and fight Tybalt instead in the end Tybalt won and killed Mercutio (this was the bad of going to that party).

The reason I think this is a semantic field is because it is Romeo talking about his fate and how it is in the hands of God and he can’t change whatever has to happen to him when he goes to the Capulet party.

There are two other things that are linked to my semantic field with is the the coincidence of the servant finding Romeo on the street and not anyone else and the prologue says to everyone two star crossed lovers take there life and as far as i have read up to the two lovers are Romeo and Juliet this is showing the future of the play and what happens to them these two things that i have talked about in this paragraph is part of my semantic field.

Shakespeare uses the idea of metaphor by showing romeo talking about his ship ( which is him) being sailed on voyage which god is leading him to his final destination.

Romeo was talking about having a dream about his death but then Benvolio had said that if we don’t go now we will be late to the party, Romeo had replied saying “I fear to early, for my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars shall bitterly begin his fearful date with this nights revels, and expire the term of a despised life clos’d in my breast by some vile forfeit of untimely death.but he that hath the steerage of my course direct my sail! On,lusty gentlemen”.

In this piece Romeo was explaining that if he goes to that party he could die but at the same time he would of met the most beautiful girl h has ever seen,Romeo had even agreed to this and said to everyone that his is meant to happen it was destiny a fate that god gave him he said let my sail direct me in my course even if it is death. The statement i was talking about before in my paragraph was this statement “hath the steerage of my course direct my sail! On,lusty gentlemen”. In this metaphor he is describing himself as a ship being helmed by God.This is one of metaphors that is used in the play it is also one of my favourite.

The chorus (prologue) has a lot to do with the  play especially in the area of fate in the begin when he or she is speaking they explain the whole story in a point by point manner they tell that Romeo and Juliet will take there own lives to be exact the quote used was ” two star crossed lovers will take there lives “.                                                                                                                                                                       All that happens in this play is decided by god there was no over way that this could of ended it was already hanging in the stars it was unavoidable in the play we watch them try there best to change there fate live together.

In conclusion shakes pears explores the idea of fate through things like metaphors , chorus ( prologue ) , co-incidences and also even though it is not a big part in my essay but it is in an overall way with the play semantic field. Thought my essay i have been answering the question ” how does William shakespear explore the idea of fat in his play Romeo and Juliet ” and what you have seen in the essay is my explanation towards that question
